Relationships require communication.
This is a key concept that people seem to forget quite often. It makes the most sense in its simplest form: If you never talk to someone, you can't be friends with them. That's pretty straightforward, but what we seem to forget, most times, is that communication is an ongoing thing. Relationships don't just exist, they're alive (at least metaphorically). They can change and grow and adapt to new situations, new people, new circumstances. As our live change, so too do our needs, wants, thoughts, and in turn our relationships. In essence, our relationships require a constant maintenance, just like our bodies do. You could think of communication as food for your relationship. Like your need for sustenance -- if you don't eat, you will die -- your relationship is doomed if you fail to communicate with the other half of it. Typically, people aren't telepathic; you need to tell someone how you're feeling in order for them to understand where you're coming from and to adapt to suit what you need. It can be as simple as telling someone that you need a hug because of a bad day, or as complicated as informing a partner of your decision to file for divorce. Relationships, like people, are complex, and we need to keep this in mind as we interact with those around us.
